What Is a Verge Fusee Watch?
One of the questions I am often asked is, "What exactly is a verge fusee?"
The answer is that the name describes two different parts of the watch, each with its own important job.
The fusee is the cone-shaped pulley with a spiral groove around it. A fine chain connects the fusee to the mainspring barrel. When the watch is fully wound, the chain is wrapped around the narrow end of the fusee. As the mainspring gradually unwinds and loses power, the chain moves towards the wider end of the cone. This clever arrangement compensates for the weakening mainspring, helping to deliver a more even force to the movement and improving timekeeping.
The verge is something quite different. It is the watch's escapement—the mechanism that regulates the release of power through the gear train. It uses a vertical spindle carrying two small pallets, which engage with a crown wheel one tooth at a time. Each movement of the balance allows another tooth to escape, producing the familiar ticking sound that has been associated with mechanical watches for centuries.
The verge escapement was the dominant design from the sixteenth century until the late eighteenth century, when more accurate escapements gradually replaced it. Although it is less precise than later inventions, it represents one of the great milestones in the history of horology.
A Bailey verge fusee watch combines these two important technologies. The fusee provides a more consistent source of power, while the verge escapement controls the release of that power. Together they produced watches that were among the finest examples of English craftsmanship in their day.
To hold a Bailey verge fusee today is to hold more than a timepiece. It is to hold a remarkable piece of engineering, made entirely by hand over 250 years ago, and one that still demonstrates the ingenuity and skill of the craftsmen who created it.
