Good Antiques Come from Good Antiques Shops
We all dream of finding a Picasso at a flea market for £10. The reality, sadly, is rather different.
The truth is that some of the best antiques and collectables come from good antiques shops. A really smart dealer can look at something that appears, at first glance, to be complete junk and still put it on sale at a perfectly reasonable price.
Why? Because good dealers understand that not everything has to be expensive to be interesting. Sometimes the pleasure is in the oddity, the history, the craftsmanship — or simply spotting something that everyone else has overlooked.
Of course, the same applies to the middle market. At Top Banana, we have sold many, many genuine bargains over the years. Not everything we sell is a museum piece, and that is rather the point. A good antiques shop should have something for the serious collector, the beginner and the person who simply wants something interesting for their home.
So yes, keep looking around the flea markets. You never know.
But if you want good antiques, do not overlook the good antiques shops.
After all, sometimes the best place to find a bargain is the place where someone knowledgeable has already done the looking for you.
