Brittania or sterling

Why is British sterling silver 92.5% pure or 925 grade as opposed to 1000 or 999 grade i.e. pure silver. Because its a question of strength pure silver is too soft and unless made hugely thickly when casting which in turn is one very heavy and two very expensive.

Generally tin or copper is added as an alloy to make the metal more usable. Britannia silver is 950 grade or 95% pure silver and tends to used for casting detailed items such as frames etc or in this cash detailed shell shapes as opposite.

Both silvers come with full hallmarks and technically the Britannia 950 grade is more valuable but as with most silver items are intrinsically worth far more than their basic silver value.
