An Historic Bronze by James Butler RA Graces the Shop
With 60 quality dealers keeping Top Banana stocked to the brim, we are always sure of some amazing items passing through the doors. One of these just brought in Jason De Mendes Fine Art is an amazing bronze sculpture by renown contemporary artist James Butler RA (b.1931-).
As one of the foremost sculptural artists in the UK at the moment Butler's works can be seen in both national as well as international public spaces and he has also designed multiple busts of famous people and commemorative coins including a Roger Banister related 50p coin in wide circulation. What makes Butler's works so appealing is their sense of energy and he is just as happy producing items with an overtly historic as well as up to the minute feel.
The cast and patinated bronze sculpture currently in the shop dates to 1988 and was a limited edition of a work commissioned by York Minster. Following their devastating fire of 1984 which destroyed the roof of the South Transept, this sculpture was designed to be the central roof boss of the lantern Tower as part of the repairs.
The work depicts 'St Peter & St Paul' and follows traditional Medieval carved boss form although with Butler's natural playfulness. It weighs 28.4kg.
