Why is this spoon tear shaped

Salt spoons tend to be a round bowl to hold and deliver salt. Whilst mustard spoon as pictured here tend to have a tear shaped bowl to facilitate delivery of the more viscous mustard to be effectively poured into place.

Similarly the difference between a soup and a desert spoon. The Victorians in particular had almost an item for every type of use from asparagus tongs through to oyster spoons.

Whilst perhaps these days not so vital, except at a smart do try eating your soup with a desert spoon, and you will soon realise why things have evolved into the design and shape they are.

Victorian and period cutlery is a fascinating and useful genre to collect and perhaps more importantly have fun using.
