Why do we in Great Britain call for a pair of scissors, pair of steps etc
One would assume for scissors a pair of blades, for steps normally both sides have steps, a pair of scales normally 2 pans.
Recently an American buyer emailed us asking "are there two of these scales as I can only see one". We then explained the above they say two nations separated by a common language. To quote George Bush how can you ever respect the French they have no word for entrepreneur.
This why we have centimeters and inches, penny weights and grams and we normally provide 4 to 10 photo's of each item on the listing, www.topbananaantiques.com, and on the American sites we do try and use words like railroad for railway, pitcher for jug, pin for brooch. We also have google translate on our website too.
