Why a screen on a pole
In the past often particularly in country houses but also town house a pole screen was used to protect the ladies of the house blushes i.e. they were positioned to protect the ladies faces from the direct heat of the fire.
In our centraly heated houses these have unfortunately fallen out of favour bit often for a 200 year old item in good woods with a good needlework can be brought often for around the hundred pound mark and actually apart from great value add instant and moveable decoration, unlike perhaps a fixed picture.
Funny personally I wouldn't be without a wood fire but I am lucky to live in the countryside, but these still make great decoration even if blushes or red faces are no longer needed to be saved.
