Often coming from Mexico, an opal contained with in a specific semi precious or semi hard rock. Opals are formed with silica rich water is put under pressure and encapsulated in layers of sedimentary rock.

Often its enhanced by use of doublets 2 layers of opal of triplet often a black backing making white opal look like its more expensive black cousin.

Due to the make up of the silica each area has its own type of opal,Australia is the most famous, however Ethiopia has very interesting yellow hued stones and even Europe has water opal often loved by the Austro Hungarian jewellery manufactures. Mexico has these boulder opal that are contained within loose rocks and are not really possible to get as single stones but encased withing this pink rock very attractive and unique.
