What is ormilou
Actually real 24ct gold gilded onto brass or more often bronze, to give an overall effect of gold.
Often with Regency items used just to highlight small areas of cast decoration, and later whole items and even furniture mounts became popular to ormilou.
Particularly in the late 19th century, when items tended to copy the earlier 17th and 18th century opulent looking items.
Ormilou is the art of gilding metal in particular as opposed to gilt wood and gilding, and is attached directly onto the metal, no bol or gesso is used as a colouring or method of holding gold in place.
