What is a salver used for?

Basically a tray, normally for visiting cards, for the butler to present a card from a caller who of course will be waiting in drawing room or large hallway announcing who they are maybe what they do.

Later on more often or not a salver would be placed in a hallway with letter etc placed on either to be received in the house or taken to post box.

Of course with a tiny bit of imagination easy to use for petite fours or food display generally, or even look great with a decanter and glasses on , or even a spirit or port bottle and glasses and saves ruining the patina on your fine antique table.

An all round useful item and of course not all salvers or waiters as some would call them are round.
