Antique Centres With No Antiques
I sometimes wonder whether the word antique has become rather elastic.
I see photograph after photograph on social media of antique centres proudly advertising themselves, only to look at the picture and wonder where the antiques are.
There may be some vintage, the odd interesting piece, and occasionally something genuinely old — but increasingly, an “antique centre” can seem to contain almost everything except antiques.
I recently came across a post from someone proudly announcing that he was the only person in the area who had signed a contract to stock a particular line of reproduction furniture.
The only person.
And apparently this was something to boast about.
Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with reproduction furniture. If you like it, buy it. But I do find it slightly amusing when an antique centre is advertising the fact that it has secured an exclusive range of things that aren't antiques.
At Top Banana, we are not pretending that every object in the building is a museum piece. We have a bit of junk, certainly, and plenty of vintage. That is part of the fun of rummaging around an old shop. But the overwhelming majority of what we sell is genuinely antique.
And perhaps that is the point.
We don't sell crafts.
We don't sell greeting cards.
We don't sell homemade jam.
We don't sell reproduction furniture as antiques.
We sell antiques.
Quite a simple idea, really.
