What is a Menuki
Originally menuki were made to decorate the gaps in between the silk thread binding on the hilt or handle of a samurai sword.
Made from cast bronze then inlaid with various metals such as gold of different colours and silver copper and brass and tin.
In c1860 samurai swords were banned in Meji period, and the fine craftsman of these items turned their hands to making jewellery belt buckles and adornments on boxes and furniture etc.
Menuki are little works of art in their own right the work and detail really often if looking at daily you will still see different things, and symbolism.
