What does period mean?

Obviously, not sure if you can start a sentence with obviously but period means a set amount of time. In the case of antiques 'period' generally means c1780 to c1840, period generally means the item is correct to the period i.e. if its looks Georgian and is correct then its a period piece, i.e. correct not just a replica or reproduction looking the part.

Bear in mind so much of say 1920s oak are copies of earlier items even as early as Tudor items from the 16th century.

So first of all check the style is correct for the period then look at the workmanship and quality of the timber etc to work out if a correct period item.
