Trick or Treat?! Happy Haloween From Everyone At Top Banana!!
Halloween or all hallows eve is celebrated on the 31st October each year. Its roots stem from the traditional Celtic festivals of Samhain in Ireland and Scotland and Calan Gaeaf in Wales. These festivals mark the end of the harvest season and welcome in the long dark nights of winter. Similarly to Halloween today people believe the veil between our world and the world of the dead is thinnest at this time; and fairies and spirits are thought to be able to cross over with ease seeking hospitality from the living. Offerings of food and drink were left outside to appease the spirits in the hope that they would allow the people and their livestock to survive the winter. Mumming and guising were part of the festival, and involved people going door-to-door in costume (or in disguise), often reciting verses in exchange for food not giving food was thought to bring misfortune. Youths went house-to-house with masked, painted or blackened faces, often threatening to do mischief if they were not welcomed. This is something we still see today throughout many modern day countries as trick or treat..
