Pate-de-sur
Another French word, pate means paste, so in essence this item is blank fired, and then a tube of paste of porcelain is then squeezed onto the blank item as a additional decoration to then be filled in with glaze allowing a finely detailed decoration in particular a block decoration of colour, ideal in this case for colouring crests.
When glaze is fired it becomes liquid and then tends to run merge with any colour next to it.
As you can see with picture this allows fine detail with gold etc to fill small areas as glaze as opposed to gold added after which is more expensive and takes more time and skill, allowing these to be produced in larger quantities and more quickly.
