Often recycled rarely bettered
We know in the 1820 the grand tour was a popular pastime and way of learning about the classics and often period i.e. real antiquities were found and reused in jewellery such as these Roman cameo in hardstone agate and carnelian.
Throughout the whole of Italy and Greece these period items were readily found, and reused in jewellery. even statues and part statues were brought back as souvenirs.
Later on museum copies in plaster were made and brought as a record of the antiquities and sold in simply drawer pine boxes, as soft not suitable for jewellery but still a good source of information and make great looking pictures if framed.
Pictured is a rare cameo of dogs animals are always sought after and dogs and rabbits are rarely found.
