Needle work is not the same a petite point

Petite point has 22 thread or stitches per inch other wise its not petite point and its sewn by hand, and more often in cotton and silk than wool as finer.

Needlework work is again done by hand but less fine, and often in wool but of course silk and cotton can used.

Berlin wool work is a process of using a pre-formed card to with the aid of a weaving machine to automatically sew a picture of a commercial subject such as a cat or religious scene onto to a material sheet.

Long stitch is as it sounds using long stitches of normally silk to block fill in an area of colour on a dress or flag etc.

Stevenographs were another mechanical process using cards to make fine detailed silk pictures often of historical events or fox hunting.

There are many copies of fine hand work and in the 1950s gilt metal petite point bags were very popular, however not petite point at all just looked the part, if it ain't got 22 stitches per inch it ain't petite point and if it isn't hand done then its likely to be a Berlin wool picture or similar.

Often dealer grab at a  name to come across with authority and I am afraid very often wrong by mistake. We oversea the goods and descriptions @topbananaantiques to try and minimise this.
