Monteith
Often one can guess the meaning of an item by looking at the word, say a strainer or ladle etc.
A Monteith is not so easy, really down to tax in first place and then smaller dining tables with the emergence of middle classes etc.
Tax was due to the window of glass tax where glass was taxed and often the amount of lead as in lead crystal determined how much tax you paid, to avoid having half a dozen different glasses for different courses wines etc, one used a Monteith the castellated top allowing you to place the stem of your wine glass on the rim and spin around in water inside the Monteith bowl to rinse and recharge your glass with different wine.
So as with all things why not have an attractive silver bowl on your dining table or indeed sideboard to facilitate cleaning of your glasses.
