Meiji

Meiji a period of time from Japan in the late 19th to early 20th century, 1868 to 1912.
Whilst all sort of item are from the Meiji period more often than not associated with bronze, in particular a brown dark olive green patinated bronze often very finely cast and decorated.
In this period also Samuria swords were banned so there were many craftsmen effectively out of work, so they set too, making decorative tsubas and miouki and shibyama work to add as decoration to boxes furniture and just as jewellery, previously blogs have been written explaining all these things and can be written in the future.
As with all things of the late 19th century a major period of innovation and fine art and mass production of fine art and decoration.
This coincided with the aesthetic period in Great Britain as well as the love by the Victorian of all thing exotic and oriental, with mass produced bamboo and lacquered furniture, to supply the demand for the newly opened up Orient and in particular Japan.
