Jadeite is a type of jade — specifically, the rarer and more valuable variety not what D.R.D thinks

So called expert on Dickensons real deal said jadite is a kind of man made jade, unfortunatley a huge subject as antiques are most people get it wrong, we are lucky @ Top Banana Antiques have a pool of over 200 years experiencet to drawer on.

Jadeite is a type of jade — specifically, the rarer and more valuable variety.

🟢 In simple terms:

  • Jade actually comes in two different minerals:
    1. Jadeite
    2. Nephrite

  • Jadeite is the harder, denser, and more precious of the two. Top-quality jadeite — especially in rich emerald green (known as Imperial Jade) — can be more expensive than diamonds.

🧪 What it is, geologically:

  • A pyroxene mineral, formed under high pressure in metamorphic rocks.

  • Chemical formula: Na(Al,Fe)Si₂O₆

  • Hardness on Mohs scale: 6.5–7, tougher than most gemstones.

🎨 Colours:

Jadeite isn’t only green. It comes in:

  • Imperial Green (rich emerald green, with chromium) — most valuable

  • Lavender

  • White / Colourless

  • Yellow, orange, black, grey

  • Often translucent to opaque; high translucency increases value.

💎 Uses:

  • Jewellery: bangles, rings, pendants

  • Carvings: traditional Chinese figurines, seals, ornaments

  • Status symbol in East Asian cultures, particularly China and Myanmar (Burma)

🌍 Main sources:

  • Myanmar (Burma) — source of the finest jadeite in the world

  • Also found in Guatemala, Japan, Kazakhstan, Russia, USA (California)
