Gold Coin or Bitcoin

People rarely buy what makes sense — they buy whatever everyone else is buying. Bitcoin, AI shares, whatever glows green on a screen. Tap a button and you’re an investor. No weight, no history, nothing to hand down. It’s the Emperor’s New Clothes, just digital.

Gold can be bought by button too — sovereigns, silver bars, ETFs — but when it arrives, it’s different. It has weight. It rings on wood. You can hide it, hold it, hand it to someone in any country and they’ll know it has value. And if it’s a sovereign, it’s legal tender — capital gains tax free in the UK. Bitcoin might triple. AI shares might take off. But they can vanish — bad earnings call, system failure, password lost — and all you’re left with is a number that used to be higher.

Gold, silver, jewellery and antiques are different — they are SECURITY. Tangible, private, outside the system. No bank, no app, no minister can freeze them. And unlike digital wealth, you can also use and enjoy them — a silver cream jug on the table, a Georgian sofa you sit on, a pair of earrings you wear. Real things that hold memory and value.

Governments are running out of money. Taxes will not go down — they can’t. Not just this November Budget, but the next, and the next. Ageing populations, wasted spending, borrowed futures — someone has to pay. Wealth left in banks, pensions or digital shares can be taxed, delayed or “adjusted”. A coin, a silver teapot, a Victorian brooch in your drawer cannot. They are tax free, under your control, and yours.

AI shares and Bitcoin are belief assets. Maybe they are the future. Maybe they’re tulips with better lighting. You can’t drink tea from them, sit at them, or leave them wrapped in paper to your grandchildren.

And the sofa test?
An antique or vintage sofa — a real frame with proper materials — can be reupholstered and still be worth money decades later. A modern foam-and-faux-leather sofa? Ten years, then split, sagging and straight to landfill. Can’t be saved, repaired or recycled. One fills your life with value — the other fills landfill.

Gold coin or Bitcoin — one is belief, the other is weight.
