Every Trade Has a Buyer and a Seller
Every trade has a buyer and a seller — and, strangely enough, both usually think they are the clever one!
At Top Banana, we think that's perfectly healthy. The buyer wants to buy at the right price, the seller wants to sell at the right price, and somewhere in the middle is called doing a deal.
It doesn't have to be a battle of wills, nor a competition to see who can make the other person feel they've just made the worst decision of their life.
A good antique sale is about reaching a price where both parties are happy to shake hands and say, "Yes, that's fair."
The buyer gets something they really want at a price they're comfortable with. The seller parts with something at a price they are happy to accept. And neither goes home wondering whether they should have taken up a career in poker instead.
That's particularly important with antiques. We want our customers to come back — and sellers to come back too. You don't build a successful antiques business by trying to win every deal. You build it by making good, fair deals that people are happy to repeat.
So yes, haggle if you like. We expect it. It's part of the fun.
But ultimately, the best deal isn't where one person wins and the other loses. It's where both walk away thinking they've got the better end of the bargain.
Now that is what I call consensus — with a little bit of haggling thrown in for good measure.
