English pewter the trade-name for Liberty's pewter
Pewter is an alloy of lead tin and zinc, making a medium hard material suitable for bending or molding in sheets into usable items.
Archibald Knox amongst other designers was inspired by Celtic deigns from a school archeological trip and along with Dr Christoper Dresser, William Heir Hassler and Bailie made one off had enameled statement items for decoration of the home.
With the dawning of tourist market Ireland caught on quickly to supplying hand made items in wood and stone, for this new market and further fueled by an Celtic Irish exhibition in the mid 1888 at the worlds fair.
English pewter became the trademark for the slightly more affordable mass made although still with elements of hand crafting, to although sales to wider market.
Each item of English Silver will have a serial number on base and "o" number which can be looked up to show pattern number type and designer.
