Cameo or Intaglio
A cameo is normally a 2 dimensional carving often through a layered material such as shell or stone, helping to give a 3 dimensional look, often heads or rarer to be animals or scenes.
An intaglio if carved into a surface more often stone but sometimes gold or silver or even steel to give a mono looking picture until it is placed in wax or putty to then reveal by pressing hard a two dimensional figure of monogram.
So cameo shows all the time and is enhanced by layers of colour and an intalgio is effectively only fully revealed when used as seal or stamp.
