Vinces Vault

VVV240733.T

Antique Edwardian Period Top Quality Shell Cameo Brooch (Likely Naples bay) finely carved and detailed with the head of the Greek God Dionysus, The God of wine, son of Zeus and mortal Semele. (Bacchus or Dionysus?) Bacchus is the Roman name for the Greek god Dionysus where as Dionysus is the native original, so there is no difference in the deities themselves, though the names refer to different cultural contexts. Both Bacchus and Dionysus are the gods of wine, fertility, revelry, and ecstasy, but their stories and worship practices differ due to their origins in Roman and Greek cultures, respectively.

Dionysus in this carved depiction looks right with long curled locks adorned with Grape vines and fruit.

Mounted in 9ct Rose Gold the reverse to the brooch is secure with fitted, hinged pin and clasp in good working order as well as original, provisional 9ct gold safety chain.
The Brooch is wonderfully preserved, it being in original condition more or less, there being no damages or dings to the gold frame and there being no hairlines or chips to the shell setting.
The brooch measures 3.7 cm x 3.8 cm with the safety chain measuring approximately 7 cm in length, the reverse to the brooch on the gold frame is impressed with good clear markings for 9ct gold along with the makers mark for Constantine & Floyd of Regent Place, Birmingham.
