Trencher salts are small individual open salt cellars used at each diner’s place setting, their name deriving from the old “trencher” or dining plate. Made in materials such as silver, pewter, wood and delft, they are valued for their simplicity and charm.

Unlike some later salt cellars, trencher salts were generally used without liners, glass inserts or separate fittings, the salt being placed directly into the vessel itself. Their untouched interiors and honest wear are often part of their appeal.

They may be seen as forerunners of the modern-day individual salt cellar, reflecting a long tradition of personal table service. First appearing in the 18th century and continuing into the early 19th century, examples dating to around 1810, such as these, belong to the later period of their use.
