Antique Late 18th Century lovely Quality Mourning Brooch in a traditional style featuring a Bench-Worked, very intricate plume of hair of the deceased to the setting beneath a bevelled glass, mounted to a porcelain inset the hair of the deceased is accented with gold wire floral detailing and a binding band to the lower stem set with a quartet of seed pearls, the gold frame to the setting of the brooch is heavily pierced with scrolled foliate work and finished to the reverse with original hinged pin and clasp, overall condition is very good, the bench-worked hair and accents being in original condition beneath the bevelled glass, the reverse to the brooch does show original period Jeweller repairs however in the form of two gold mounted plates securing the gold frame together in two places as can be seen from the photographs but not outwardly noticeable.

An Impressive piece and of a large size measuring 6 cm x 5 cm or 2.3 inches by 2 inches it makes for a wonderful example of latter Georgian period Memento-Mori jewellery dating to around circa 1790.
Although unmarked the frame has been tested to at least 9ct gold.
