Antique Late19th Century Soldiers Absolute Abstinence Association Medal is Sterling Silver complete with original silk ribbon and clasp with pin fitting to the reverse.
The British India Soldiers' Total Abstinence Association (STAA) medals were issued to members of the British Indian Army during the period to promote and reward temperance with some featuring an 'Excelsior' top bar as with the example, the STAA was Founded in 1862 by Reverend John Gelson Gregson with the associations aim to combat the high rates of drunkenness among troops in India.
The Medal including ribbon measures 12.5 cm in length with the medal itself measuring3.7 cm x 3.5 cm, no makers marks or otherwise are present to the medal but it has been tested for sterling silver and is presented in a period jewellers box for Toy, Kenning & Spencer whom were medallists of the period.
