The inscription to the lid makes a wonderful little piece of history to this charming antique 18ct yellow gold snuff box dating from the year 1814 with English hallmarks. The inscription reads
"To R. W. Joe Esq, from his greatly obliged, Sir Thomas Hislop, anno 1817"
In late 1814, Hislop finally took up a post in India as Commander-in-Chief of the Madras Army and rewarded for his services the same year with a baronetcy as well as being invested as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. Whilst we do not know the story of Mr Joe and what he did for Sir Thomas in 1817, at this time Sir Thomas Hislop was fighting in India in the Third Anglo Maratha War being given the command of British Forces numbering 5,500 men. The campaign was successful with the defeat of a 35,000 strong army of Malhar Rao Holkar at the Battle of Mahidpur, and Hislops army was dissolved in March 1818.
