Antique Late Victorian Period Gorgeous example of a Surviving Memento Mori Locket in the traditional style, it being oval in shape, featuring a hinged spine and finger grip opening to the side so as to store a keepsake of the deceased, in this instance a small picture, miniature or lock of hair or similar.
The Locket is plain backed but finished to the front in relief worked black enamel with the legend "In Loving Memory", there is some small loss of enamel but nothing serious, the legend still being very ledible.
The Locket features a hinged bale to the top so as to serve for when threading with a chain, ribbon or string for wearing about the neck and is impressed to the interior back plate with good clear markings indicating Birmingham assay office circa 1892 with the makers mark 'JG&Co', the lock excluding bale when closed shut measures 3 cm x 2.3 cm x 5 mm in dimension.
