Wine cooler or cellarette

Sort of does what it says on the tin, these were for large dinner parties, before refrigeration, large country houses had ice houses, where in winter months land/ponds would be flooded to hold water, allowing to be frozen, then being cut into blocks and housed in ice houses where it was stored in insulated buildings often deep underground and then cut into blocks and brought into homes to use in items such as these.

In towns firms would deliver ice, often on carts or even bicycles to fill ice boxes, an early form of the fridge, these wine coolers allowed constant flow of ice cold drinks to be delivered to the table.

As they have no moving parts still eminently usable today, although not sure most of us can afford the drinks to fill them, but imagine a wedding or big birthday party how wonderful to use one of these and of course make a great box for storage or even better maybe a planter to cover an unused fireplace or brighten up a hallway.

Antiques should be used and enjoyed.
