Why does one need a button hook
These days buttons tend to be of a size and normally on shirt or jackets. In the past really from Tudor times, in particular ladies had tens of button to fasten and unlike today's ergonomically designed buttons of a pretty well standard size. Previously button were often tiny a few millimeters or 2 tenths of an inch.
By there very size hard to manage, so a button hook aided fastening, bear in mind boots alone had probably 40 buttons, cuffs 6, shirts 20 or more on a shirt let alone camisoles and the numerous layers worn.
As with so many things that were practical the Victorians delighted in making them as attractive and over the top as possible, example shown is unusual to be inlaid with Scottish agate, but all sorts of novelty things were used such as legs, animals, even hand shaped handles.
