Whats it worth?
This item solid silver , hallmarked. Limited edition of 100, On Ebay for £2600 in our shop and on www.topbananaantiques for £625.
Unless a gold bullion coin, (bear in mind even these change price every few hours) it worth what someone will pay. It amazes me that every time someone comes to sell an item they have no idea of "what is worth" or "what they want" until you make an offer that is.
Antiques are like any item, they are subject to fashion and supply and demand, some are going up some are going down. Really unless in the business and even then impossible to get right its hard to get the top price for anything, unless super rare, and super lucky.
We try to offer value for both the goods we buy and the goods we sell. Its funny often people feel they get the top price for selling goods in auction, see how much is left for you after fees, about half. The auctions are a good way of clearing goods, and top flight commercial items will make a good price but you will loose half to the auction house. Far better to sell to a dealer yourself, but bear in mind when you search the internet for prices the overpriced/top retail is what you seeing.
All good sensibly priced items are snapped up and really not seen. Bear in mind shops have overheads, large overheads, and if we sell an item for £100 we do not clear anywhere near that, as a general rule i would say 1/3rd to 50 % goes in costs.
Selling online is a cost effective way if you have your own website but selling through the many online platforms is mega expensive and of course comes with theft, breakage and payment issues, which all need to be factored in. When searching out these prices unless you want to give half away to an auction you need to workout a viable prices so a dealer can make something, obviously the bigger the item more costs are involved, takes a lot more to sell a dresser then a snuff box.
