What is a vesta?
Vesta, the Roman, goddess of hearth and home, hence why, Swan Vesta's became a thing just like Hoover, and other trade name brand.
Originally matches were sold individually and covered in wax and where made to be struck on any rough surface. Hence all vesta's have a strike plate either serrated or in iron.
A vesta case was designed to be hung from your pocket watch with matches held in and with all things particularly men, rattled many novelty vesta cases were produced. As the Victorians got to grips with mass production in brass and less costly materials.
Samson Mordan took vesta to another level with heavy quality casting of silver and gold with items such as acorns and military themes and all things novelty.
A great thing to collect and still very affordable although for a top of the range Mordan one you will have to stomp up in the hundreds but many can be brought for the £20 to £50 range.
