What is patina
Basically, patina is a layer of colour and dirt caused by touching and oils and muck mixing with polish to give a patination i.e. a depth of colour, that add an indefinable amount to an item, items that are help tend to have a depth of colour by the nature of which they are used and items such as furniture will have patination and wear say to drawers and table tops etc.
The happens with bronze brass and copper, where the surface is oxidised causing verdigris and when mixed gives a depth of colour and almost mirror like surface adding to the look of feel of the metal item, as with furniture items that are help such as a pastry cutter will have more patination all over that say a bronze figure.
Patina or patination is very important, and whilst can be enhanced with polish etc, it is very hard to colour back if lost by over zealous cleaning or striping. So if in doubt check first before you ruin years of patination.
