What is a gorget
Ironically as this is from the Napoleonic wars, a gorget comes from the french word gorge meaning throat.
This decorative sheet of gilded metal was to protect the throat, same as when hunts people wear a long scarf around their neck help by a stock pin. Worn as part of ones Armour, with a long scarf behind one can imagine the brightly coloured gold gilding shining as one charged into battle, this would of deflected glancing blows of pikes or swords.
