Water gilding
Effectively putting a sheeting of gold leaf onto normally metal or though sometimes can be used on wood.
A microscopically thin sheet of solid 24ct gold is applied using a bol and glue made from animal bones etc which is washed over the part of the item you want gilded.
In this case a brass frame this adds a further layer of quality and as ages hence on corners where worn adds a lovley antique feel and of course where not worn or when newly applied stops the brass from tarnishing.
Very popular in Victorian times for add glitz to an item and over time adds a real we have been hear for generations feel, and deep down warm quality.
