Top Banana Antiques welcomes Jean Barlow
I first became interested in antiques and collectables in 2003 when I moved to Didcot from London and got married. It started with a woman's magazine advising people to look in their attics to see if they have got anything valuable. There wasn't anything valuable in our bungalow but from then on I was hooked!
I started buying Miller's books with lots of pictures and prices of antiques/collectables. My husband, David, and I started going to car boot sales. I never found any treasures at the boot sales but it was fun as you never know what you are going to find!
A few years later I started to specialise in ceramics. I loved reading about the factories, e.g. Worcester, Chelsea, Bow, Coalport, Moorcroft etc. A few years later I started to rent some cabinets in antiques centres and I did quite well.
I am currently renting a cabinet at Top Banana Antiques Mall in Tetbury, Gloucestershire. In my cabinet I have mainly traditional antiques but I am going to bring some more retro/vintage items I also have some professional dealers who buy and sell items on my behalf: I just provide the money and the dealers buy suitable items and display them for me, and we split the profit when things sell.
I enjoy working with the dealers and renting cabinets at centres as a hobby - I would find it much too stressful to run a shop or website. I collect rabbit ornaments and also William Moorcroft pieces and 18th and miscellaneous 19th century porcelain and pottery.
