Silver Overlay Glass — A Little Bit of Luxury
There is something rather special about silver overlay glass.
Dating from around the 1890s, these pieces combine the beauty of coloured or clear glass with delicate silver decoration, creating something that looks quite at home in a Victorian drawing room — and rather less at home in a modern dishwasher!
Silver overlay glass was produced in a variety of forms, from vases and bowls to drinking glasses and decorative pieces. The silver decoration could be surprisingly intricate, with floral designs, scrolling patterns and other fashionable motifs of the period.
What makes it particularly appealing is the contrast between the glass and the silver. Even after more than 100 years, the decoration can still look remarkably elegant.
And, like so many antiques, it is a reminder that people in the 1890s were quite happy to spend money on things that were beautiful simply because they were beautiful.

Just a lovely piece of glass, decorated in silver, that has survived for well over a century — and still looks good today.
