Signet Ring

Basically a seal ring with ones monogram (initials) or better still ones family crest. Worn on the left hand little finger. Why because it is designed to seal letters with hot wax. Using the left hand allows the user or wearer to roll off to left without being burnt by the molten wax.

Early rings tended to be more often in silver but of course can be in gold, but most period George II rings tend to be silver.

Again not always hand chased metal of gold or silver often carnelian, onyx, bloodstone and agates were used to either carry monograms or crests.

Like so many things if quietly worn they say much about an owner and ideally should be discreet and not flashy the huge carved seal rings actually tend to be made from fob seals rather than rings.
