Orkney chair
A chair normally made from pine but sometime oak too, with the back made from woven straw made into rope which is then sewn onto each other to make a sheet, but giving a comfortable, flexible back of the chair and often come with a woven hood too. As originating as a functional item the hoods acted as a way of keeping warm in a draughty cottage. Now highly collectable and like so many new craftsman made items tend to be far better value antique or vintage. The chairs had a resurgence in popularity in the 1970s the one pictured here is in oak and hails from c1900.
