One Good Business or Five Half-Finished Ones?
There is a temptation in business that catches many people.
The belief that the more things you do, the more successful you will become.
It sounds logical. Add another income stream. Start another project. Create another little venture. Before long, you are no longer running one business — you are running several.
The problem is that each one needs attention.
An antiques business is not simply about owning a shop and waiting for customers to arrive. It requires buying, research, pricing, photography, descriptions, marketing, customer service and constant learning.
That alone is a full-time occupation.
The danger comes when a dealer becomes distracted by too many other opportunities. A little online shop here. A side project there. A holiday venture. A completely different business idea.
None of them receives the attention it deserves.
There is a reason successful businesses tend to have a clear identity. They know what they are good at and they concentrate on doing that exceptionally well.
In the antiques trade, knowledge is built over decades. The best dealers are not successful because they occasionally sell an interesting object. They are successful because they spend their lives understanding objects.
They know what to buy, what to avoid, what is unusual and what is simply old.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with developing new ideas. Businesses must evolve. But there is a difference between expanding and losing focus.
A great antiques business should be built around antiques.
Everything else should support that purpose, not distract from it.
In the end, customers notice the difference. They know when they are dealing with someone who lives and breathes the trade, rather than someone who is simply adding another activity to a growing list.
One excellent business will usually beat five average ones.
Focus is still one of the most underrated advantages in business.
