My Brimfield Haul
You’ve seen them.
“My Brimfield haul!”
Or perhaps: “Look what I bought at Newark!”
And there it all is, proudly laid out on the kitchen table — a rather splendid collection of antiques, curiosities and things that looked far too good to leave behind.
And you think: “Blimey. I’m going next time. I’ll buy all that for half the price!”
Well, you might.
And that is half the fun of antiques.
But there is a tiny little catch.
Buying antiques is rather like buying anything else. It helps to know what you’re looking at.
Good dealers don't just buy at the big fairs. They buy at auctions, from private houses, from collections, from other dealers and from all over the world. They spend years learning what is right, what is wrong and, occasionally, what is very nearly right — which can be the expensive bit.
They know how to spot the reproduction, the replacement, the repaired, the altered and the broken. They know when a bargain really is a bargain — and when something has simply been made to look like one.
Of course, nobody gets it right every time. That is part of antiques.
But when you buy from a good dealer, you are buying more than the object.
You're buying their knowledge too.
