Must take hours all that inlay, shall we let you into a secret

Tunbridge ware as this is called, like so many things such as Spa ware Pontypool, Batersea, Mauchline ware was named from the place from which is was made.

It must take hours and hours inlay those tiny mosaics of wood into the box. Well of course it doesn't. Just like making a match stick picture strips of specimen woods often of designs or flowers or even country houses and castles, were assembled on a cutting machine, often using rare woods such as rosewood palm tree and other exotic woods, and then finely sliced into sheets and applied onto normally a pine box, making useful boxes, for gloves sewing equipment and cards etc.

Some could be very glamorous indeed with secret drawers etc, great thing to collect and use. Amazing just how many different woods were used in the fine process.
