King Charles II, one of Britain's most important Kings
We were so lucky to have had this mug come into our shop, rarer than rare.
To commemorate the restoration of the monarchy, in 1660, King Charles II was crowned in 1661.
These items were made from terracotta and as such were soft and easy to break and they were glazed in tin glaze a mixture of alloys which unlike the later invented lead glaze tended to very brittle, particularity when knocked. The mugs were hand thrown on a wheel, and then under-glazed with a white slip, which then with various oxide hand painted with a portrait of King Charles II, and dated 1660 the date of the restoration.
Mugs were the most common item but unlike the plates tended not to survive.
Later in 1793 transfers and lead glazes were invented and Queen Charlotte was the first monarch to have a transfer printed wares and mugs.
This is a terribly rare item and of course topical this year, I think we are all very pleased that nearly 400 years on we are able to buy a commemorative mug with King Charles II on.
God save the king.
