Hand chasing
Chasing is carving into a metal with a sharp tool or stylus as opposed to embossing where the design id pushed out from behind the front surface.
This allows you to get fine detail to your work creating fine designs and features such as hair or expressions on faces etc.
Many items are chased such as silver gold, copper brass and bronze, and indeed steel in the case of gun-stocks extremely talented work as metal many items harder needs a chisel and hammer and therefore even more skill do achieve.
