Collecting interesting antique German silver has so much to offer
In Great Britain, sterling silver has a date letter town of assay and lion mark to prove purity. We have about 25 or so assay offices. Several now closed some tiny and closed 200 years ago.
In Germany nearly every large town had its own assay mark and office, meaning that these items could be looked up and every detail found out about their origin maker date etc. There are detailed recorded in both books and online.
To quote website "Both table salt is complete with original blue glass liner and each salt is impressed to the underside of the foot for German Silver 800 grade along with the makers pictorial mark for Martin Mayer, noted for producing works by noted artists Hand Christiansen and Patriz Huber at the turn of the last Century, these salts date to approximately circa 1895".
This is far more information that can normally be found about English silver although much can be founds about makers etc so please do not over look German silver in your collecting.
