Large Victorian Mortar Cast by Dept of Science & Art at Elkington. Antique c.1880
Back in the mid 19th Century it was common practice for copies to be made of the great antiquities where the original could not be purchased. Elkington were one such company whose 'Deptartment of Science and Art' specialised in such educational copies. Interestingly the V&A were a large recipient for such casts.
This example dates most likely to the 1880s and depicts a copy of a large early medieval two handled mortar which has been cast in a bronze style alloy (Elkington were good at using all sorts of copper alloys and finishes for their copies).
Please see photos but it is offered in good original and untouched condition.
