Antique Georgian Period circa 1810 Superb rendition of The Hellenistic Goddess Diana The Huntress in Embroidered Silk finished with hand painted watercolour detailing notably to the backdrop setting and to Diana's arms, face, neck and flowing hair, Diana wears traditional robes and sandals, stands in pose on a Moor with a gnarled old oak tree homestead in the distance to either side, she is smiling, holding a Bow in one hand and an Arrow in the other with a trusty hound at her side, the Embroidered silk detailing is, as can be seen from the photographs quite fantastic and includes a gorgeous blend of silks from white through to turquoise on her robes, white and black to the hound and to the bow she carries (the arrow being painted).
The Rendering is realised on a silk sheet and is mounted in original period gesso on wooden frame with glaze intact, the glaze being finished with a black enamel enclosure accented with golden flower heads.
Overall condition is good for age, the rendering of Diana retaining its colours and with only mild sepia present to the silk from age with a small area of spacing to the silk sheet to the right just above the oak tree, the Gesso on wood frame shows age related wear including a crack to the wood in one area with loss of gesso as well as wear to the and gilding throughout adding to the overall character of the piece, the back to the frame retains framers paper in good order along with double lugs and period wire stringing so as to hang from a wall, the Frame measures 38 cm x 33 cm x 3 cm in dimension or 14.9 inches by 12.9 inches by 1.1 inches so is of a good size.
A Lovely antique piece that will make for a fabulous decorators item for the home.
