French Sterling Silver Chain Mail Purse Antique Art Nouveau c1900.

Isle Temple

A fabulous sterling silver chain mail purse dating from the latter end of the Victorian era- roughly 1890 when art nouveau was very popular. Art nouveau was an international style of decorative arts and this purse s a typical example of the trend with its flowing, organic lines. We believe this little purse is French, stamped on the side of the solid silver clasp is three very tiny stamps they have rubbed slightly but we believe they are the boar head for french sterling silver assayed in Paris at the time. They are rubbed and we cannot guarantee this but we are fairly confident. Stamped on the side is also the word depose which is French for registered and was very often stamped on French jewellery. This is a charming little purse with two separate compartments for your money inside. It's in good antique condition, although the chain mail has come away from the bottom of the solid clasp on both sides.

Size 8.9 x 8.0 x 0.5 cm or 3.5 x 3.1 x 0.2 inches.

Weight 63.0 grams or 40.4 penny weight.
